Great article! "Total" listening, is something I'm still working on...... Listening with the whole body, heart, and mind. While teaching classes, I find I must listen to students just as much as they try to listen in classes. People listen just fine, its just a matter of what they "hear". Because of that, I try to make sure I listen to myself and my own body in order to get a point across....and even then, sometimes I don't hear myself! :-)

It's a nice insightful story. A good listener is open minded so s/he can pick up all the nuances of what's being said..therefore patience and genuine interest are important.

A good listener is also a good observer, because reading body language assists the listener to discern the true essence of the message.

A good listener should be willing to appear foolish in his/her quest for knowledge.

Nice find.

Good listeners? Very difficult to measure as people learn in very different ways.

Personally, I find most Martial Arts people are a combination of visual and experience based learners. In fact the argument could be made that the recent explosion in video (YouTube, Google Video, etc, etc) is creating a generation of highly visual learners.
