That got a few chuckles out of me. Nicely written. :)

However, I rather believe that the majority of the worshippers of Father Science are not themselves scientists. I cannot imagine that a true man of science would claim that various things have been *proven* by science, or that such and such is a "scientific" training method, or that whatever does not exist within the extant scientific literature must be false.

P.S. I am not the Klingon captain. That is my nephew.

It feels like you're painting an awfully bleak picture of the world, Chris. I suppose if one watches enough news, the impression is that the world is descending far too quickly into such an opposition.

However, I believe that the situation is not as dire as you make it out to be. The sociological study of science is alive and well, analyzing our own biases and influences in both research and publication. Ethicists challenge scientific and religious folly alike. Groups like the Better Business Bureau and Corporate Responsibility are cleaning up the private sector, supported by a growing culture of social responsibility and activism.

Don't let the extremists cloud your view of the many caught in the middle of the struggle. Proper science is still done, and accepting religions and spirituality are more widespread than you might think. Don't assume that everyone has already picked a side, and don't assume that everyone will.

"enfeebling preoccupation with this false choice, between the religion of scientism and the scientism of religion"
I love this statement here.
It really sums it up for me.

I find it amusing that High Commander Kang wrote this; for Kang is a Klingon captain in the Star Trek mythos, a staunch opponent of Captain Kirk, and a routine thorn in the Federation's side.
