Thanks so much for posting this. The Pianist's Talent is the greatest book ever written about playing the piano, and it has so many applications to life as a whole. You are so right in seeing its multi-layered relevance.

This piano instructor's writing is further proof that martial arts are indeed art forms in the classic sense and not just "learning to fight." However, I've come across many Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students and MMA fighters who would argue the contrary.

Chris: Thanks for sharing this

I don't practice martial arts, I found myself nodding my head perpetually as I read. All the quotes resonated with my ideas about education and life generally. So, when I found in the end that piano playing was the source I wasn't surprised. You post shows that simple precepts are the foundation of an integrated global whole. It's our willingness and ability to apply them that is the challenge.

Taylor, Harold. The Pianist's Talent: A New Approach to Piano Playing Based on the Principles of F. Matthias Alexander and Raymond Thiberge (New York: Taplinger 1979)
ISBN 0-8008-6294-5

It is a very interesting book. Chapter 5 actually includes an exercise for filling the mingmen.
